As you may already know, we’re big fans of videos – making them mostly (please see our cover of “Call Me Maybe” here). That’s why we’re excited to have Bethann Stenseth of YouTube for this week’s installment of Digital Darlings. But Bethann’s interests extend beyond Silicon Valley – she runs a fashion blog on the side called Bethanimalprint and has even attended NYFW last month. She talks personal style, tech and more below.
Tell us a little bit about what you do for YouTube.
I am on the New Partner Development team which means I work with partners that are new to YouTube. I focus on developing YouTube channels for those in the fashion and fitness industry. I love it. I have been passionate about both industries since early childhood.
Why do you like working at YouTube?
Besides the satisfying breakfasts, savory lunches, pool and gym we have here? The people are the best. I work with the biggest over-achievers and the most interesting people I have ever come across. Everyone here is ridiculously smart, but somehow remain humble and incredibly altruistic. It is a very inspiring environment, which is good because there is a lot of work on my plate.
How did you start your career in technology?
After I graduated from Northern Arizona University, I got a job at a small tech company in Scottsdale, AZ. I was hired as an Executive Assistant to their Director of Sales and ended up taking on many roles during my tenure. I did everything from sales to event planning. I even had daily health and fitness chats with the CEO where we would juice and share tips on best workouts. I wore so many hats there that I felt empowered to do anything in tech. I eventually made my way to Google (and later YouTube) in 2011.
If we stopped you on the street, what would you be wearing?
I live in the Bay Area, where there are several microclimates, so I have learned to layer. I usually have a James Perse tee on with a sweater thrown over it and a blazer or jacket on top of that. I like to look put together, but not overly polished. You’ll find me in my J.Brand distressed skinny jeans a lot.
What are your style essentials?
Style is more about your total look than just your clothes to me, so I make sure to include polished nails and lip gloss on my essential items list. Other necessities include, black boots in every heel height and style possible. They just work with everything and I can never have too many. I don’t invest in every season’s “it” bags, but rather in classic ones that I’ll carry for years. They say a lot about you and it’s important to send the right message.
What spring trends are you the most excited to try?
After NYFW, I am obsessed with the re-emergence of grunge. There are endless ways to style the beautiful, veiled looks trending this spring with the chunky Balenciaga boots and beanies circa 1990. There’s something wonderful about that kind of contrast.
What music are you listening to right now?
No matter how old I get, I still love the bubbly sounds of pop. Dance music is a close second. The Sounds, Icona Pop, Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, Bruno Mars, David Guetta, and Ellie Goulding are my go-to artists. Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” is inescapable with the amount of time I spend on YouTube.
What is one thing not many people know about you?
I started my first company when I was 6. It was called BA Co. (short for Bethann’s Company). I would draw pictures of clothes in my notebooks and sell them to my family and neighbors under the guise that they were catalogs for merchandise they could buy when I learned to sew. My brother was the only person on my sales team. I never learned to sew, but when I do, I owe a few people some garments!
