Our newest Digital Darling is Jessica “Jae” Salinas of Livestream. Jae curates user-created events on the site and social channels and helps produce livestreams for New York Fashion Week. A movie buff at heart, she also does digital communications for DEGA Films, a group of Brooklyn filmmakers. Read on for some of her summer movie recommendations and her style must-haves for Fashion Week.
Tell us about your role at Livestream.
My title is Acting Editor at Livestream. My job is to discover events that our users are creating and highlight those events on our site and across our social channels. There are live events happening all the time, from all over the world and I get to curate the good stuff.
What do you most look forward to for New York Fashion Week?
I always look forward to the live shows that are streamed from Milk Studios for MADE fashion week. The designers are carefully curated by an extremely talented team — and they know how to throw a good party. When I’m lucky enough to be a part of our production team during fashion week, I get to watch the shows in person from behind the scenes.
What are your style essentials?
Black leather moto boots. I’ve had the same pair for two seasons — they are the perfect choice whether you are running a show during fashion week or in a crowded venue for a concert.
If we stopped you on the street, what would you be wearing?
It will most certainly be black… probably a band t-shirt by the now defunct Soundscreen Design from Insound, metallic short shorts or skinny jeans on the bottom, and black leather moto boots or high tops on my feet.
You are also a film buff. What are some of your must-see movies this summer?
Upstream Color is such a trip. If you are into cerebral sci-fi movies, queue it up on Netflix RIGHT NOW. As for summer blockbusters: Pacific Rim is on my to watch list. It’s Guillermo del Toro, that one is a no brainer.
What’s on your iPod right now?
Broadcast. Their entire discography is always an arms length away. Aside from them I’m listening to: Death Grips, Zomby, Mount Kimby, Archie Pelago on my iPod or on vinyl. I also have a small place in my heart reserved for Soundclound. FACT magazine, Ninja Tunes, SSENSE, and Boilerroom are particularly good at curating their streams.
What is one tech gadget you can’t live without?
My iPhone. I’m on call 24/7 so I need to be connected at all times. It is the first thing I look at when I wake up, the last thing I look at before I go to bed, and it sits right next to my head in case something urgent pops up in the middle of the night.
