We’ve been girl-crushing on Karen O ever since she broke through the New York music scene with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs over a decade ago and seduced us with her flashy outfits, screechy howls, and brash stage antics. As music lovers, she’s long been the epitome of cool in our eyes. So naturally, we were beyond excited when she released the video for “Rapt,” the first single off her debut solo album.
The album, Crush Songs, features a collection of intimate bedroom recordings. The lo-fi acoustic “Rapt” is marginally different from her work with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more reminiscent of her Oscar-nominated “Moon Song,” which she recorded for Spike Jonze’s 2013 movie Her (she broke up with Jonze prior to recording the album). In the video, O floats underwater in red requins as she candidly sings about helplessly falling in love.
She explains on her website, “When I was 27, I crushed a lot. I wasn’t sure I’d ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They were the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours.”
Crush Songs comes out on September 9. Check out the video above, and tell us what you think.
