And that’s pretty much the story of Kate Gilman, CEO and founder of Petal by Pedal, who jumped from a career in law to greener pastures. Literally. Her young NYC-based start-up is an environmentally-friendly take on the standard florist. They source their farm-fresh blooms from a variety of local New York growers, build handcrafted bouquets that follow the seasonal growing calendar, and make all deliveries by bike (get the name?). For a jolt of cab-free fresh air, us New Yorkers jump at the chance to visit Sleepy Hollow. The upstate destination is the ideal locale to see the leaves change. Plus, it offers the best activities to fully embrace the chilly (and spooky) season. Here are our favorite spots to hit up when we’re in town.
To get yourself in the spirit, start off at the gravesites of Washington Irving and much of the gang who inspired the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow:” Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel, Brom Bones and the Headless Horseman. They’re all buried at (or near) the Old Dutch Church, aka the oldest standing church in New York. And it’s still a functioning church, believe it or not.
