Seven RM Superwomen from
five businesses in honor
of one movement.

To celebrate International Women's Day, we're honoring women challenging the status quo and inspiring gender equality in the workforce. Through their businesses and initiatives, these entrepreneurial ladies #PressforProgress on their own terms — creating positive change with an impactful, optimistic message of inclusion.

Amplifying women in industries spanning tech, education, news media, community culture and career flexibility, this portrait series captures fearless female leaders who are twisting and turning our current cultural landscape to create new solutions that work.

We met up with these Superwomen in their offices to talk pressing for progress, galvanizing women to support women, and why now, more than ever, we must maintain a persistent resilience to complacency — women must continue to demand greater agency both professionally and socially.

"Besides the obvious things like pay disparity and absence of women in senior leadership, too many businesses simply do not prioritize women's health, happiness, or comfort. Women face particular challenges in society, and even small changes — like access to menstrual products and generous parental leave policies — can have a big effect. In general, supporting women's personal and career development means trusting that women can do the work. Women can do the work and do it well."

"We saw a huge void in the market for news that fit into the routines of our friends — who we later learned were part of the coveted 'female millennial' demographic. We knew this audience, we knew their routines, and we knew we could build a company that helped make it easier for them to live smarter."

"We are proud to be a company founded and run by two female entrepreneurs. More than half of our employees are women. We put a huge emphasis on empowering female entrepreneurs in our community, and we’re hopeful that our company’s efforts can contribute, in a way, to an industry-wide shift."

“Educating girls is not an act of charity. It is an act of justice.”

"To heal our world we need to heal ourselves, our families and communities. We cannot challenge the status quo when we are seeking approval, feeling inadequate and insecure. We must approach our activism from a place of whole love, connection and purpose."

"I am hopeful and energized as I picture a world where women, and all those who are currently disenfranchised, come to occupy a just and equal role in society. That will be a far more kind and joyful world."

"#PressforProgress reminds us of all the trailblazers who came before us, the women who pressed forward, breaking down barriers and shattering glass ceilings in a world that wasn’t designed for their success. Thanks to their sacrifices, we are able to realize our dreams today. But this campaign also reminds us that our work is far from done, and that if we stop pressing forward for just one second, we risk regressing. We owe it to the next generation of women to leave our world a little better than when we entered it."

"If the rules are broken, change them."

"When we first started out, about 87% of Andela developer applicants were male. We couldn’t have that. So we made a concerted effort to attract more female applicants. We hired female recruiters, developed marketing campaigns targeting women and conducted all-female recruitment cycles. After switching things up, we saw the number of female developer applicants increase by over 200%! Today we are about 26% women technologists and over 50% women in all other roles. Uplifting female voices at Andela is an ever-present goal and a value woven into the fabric of our company."

"Superwomen support other women. Superwomen are badasses who embrace their femininity, thrive when presented with challenges, bring people together and lift up others."
